Evangel Christian School FAQs
Following are actual questions asked throughout the years regarding Evangel Christian School. If your question is not answered, please feel free to submit a question of your own from the link at the bottom of the page.
Athletics
Is Evangel Christian School primarily athletics-driven?
- Evangel Christian School is not primarily athletics-driven. As home education continues to move forward, Evangel Christian School envisions itself as a leader in every area of educating its students. As athletics provides for many students the opportunity for team building, character development, and competitive enrichment, Evangel Christian School seeks not only to provide athletics for its families but also to do so with excellence.
My children play golf. Is this a possibility at Evangel Christian School? Will Evangel Christian School offer soccer and track?
- One of the important elements of the vision of Evangel Christian School is to make use of the gifts of all the families that authorize us to be their home school covering. If there are enough families with similar interests, all sporting activities are a possibility. This is not limited to athletic endeavor. Academics also will reach its fullest potential by each family contributing to the group with their gifts.
Are there tryouts to determine who can play a particular sport?
- Some sports require tryouts if the number of interested participants exceeds the optimal level for team management. Traditionally, baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball are sports that have necessitated tryouts, while football has not.
In what sports league is Evangel Christian School affiliated?
What are the advantages of Evangel Christian School for those not interested in athletics over any other home school covering?
- An exciting distinctive of Evangel Christian School is found in its organizational structure. We have been blessed to come under the leadership of an evangelical church body through a unanimous vote of its session. We therefore, have the privilege of having direction of a board nominated by school members and approved by the church, who have the direct oversight of the Evangel Church session to which we provide monthly financial reports and annual complete school progress reports. This is a structure which we believe is Biblical and allows school members to be confident that the school will survive and flourish no matter who administrates it.
- Evangel Christian School opens its athletic program to the students of Evangel Classical Christian School (ECCS) and, correspondingly, ECCS opens its classes to ECS students.
- We encourage home education as an opportunity to know the preeminence of Christ. We encourage involvement with the local community through leadership, service, and creative activities and desire to be salt and light.
- We have year round regularly scheduled office hours. Our administrative staff is committed to serving the individual family as well as the group as a whole. We will schedule individual guidance counseling meetings by request and will provide regular optional group meetings related to various topics.
Academics
How much guidance or control does Evangel Christian School have over my academic studies?
- The school will provide encouragement and guidance in whatever academic endeavors Evangel Christian School families require and will aid and instruct the parent in meeting required state and federal standards for education.
Must both parents agree to Evangel Christian School’s Statement of Faith in order to be admitted?
- Currently, the stance of Evangel Christian School is that only one parent is required to commit to these standards. This is, however, subject to Board revision.
Is testing required?
- No
How many days/school year does the child need to attend?
- The board, mindful of the vision of the school, the best interests of the student’s long-term education and state law, will determine this. Our current requirement is 175 days.
What are the record-keeping responsibilities of the parents?
- The curriculum choice(s) will be submitted in writing by the parent/teacher at the beginning of the school year with attendance and grades submitted to the office at the end of each semester. It is recommended that parent/teachers utilize the overview of material and lesson planning as a means to assist in the completion of the educational goals of their children/students.
What is considered an “A” grade?
- With an eye toward keeping standards high but manageable, an “A” will be measured as 90-100%. Costs
Are the costs such as registration fees and tuition designed to support athletics? If not, for what are these fees used?
- The fees paid to Evangel Christian School are directly applied to the operational costs of the school to support and maintain our facilities and cover all administrative costs including the salaries of a full-time administrator, and part-time guidance counselor and bookkeeper, along with operational costs, office equipment, mailings, supplies, services, and facilities usage fees.
Is the fee for taking classes through Evangel Tutorials reduced for Evangel Christian School members?
- The Evangel Tutorials Program is one of those many benefits offered to Evangel Christian School Families. Therefore, the fees for participation in those services will be greatly discounted to Evangel Christian School members.
Is a fee charged for transcripts or letters of recommendation?
- Costs will always be kept as low as possible while addressing the administrative costs of such services. As of now, this service is offered at no additional cost.
Social / Enrichment Activities and Opportunities
Are there field trips?
- Yes. We consider field trips to be an invaluable part of the educational process and development of community and we will encourage them. We will make as many suggestions as possible and help in the facilitation of as many as parents deem valuable.
What classes, social activities, sports, cheerleading opportunities, etc. are offered through the school?
- Evangel Christian School is set up to offer as many activities as the Board allows, the funding can adequately compensate, and the parents decide are valuable. See all the Services Provided by Evangel Christian School.
Is there a prom?
- Yes. God has raised up a group of interested families who have, under close Board direction and with prayerful and willing spirits, dedicated themselves to producing a Junior/Senior Prom that glorifies God and enables us to enjoy Him as we fellowship together in this setting.
In light of wanting to provide organizations and opportunities recognized by colleges and the community does Evangel Christian School provide Honor Society?
- Yes. Evangel Christian School is now a recognized Chapter of the National Christian Homeschool Honor Society.
More Good Questions
What are the qualifications of the administrators?
- Bill and Sandy Snuggs have been uniquely blessed by God to be able to work well together. This is an ongoing part of their relationship and one in which they take great pleasure. They demonstrate love and respect for each other on a very deep level.
Bill Snuggs:
- B.A., Covenant College in Biblical Studies, Education and Sociology (Interdisciplinary Studies)
- Skilled management professional with over 14 years of combined experience in multi-unit management, operations, staff administration, retail sales, and financial controls with consistent contributions to business growth and profits
- Strong administrative and leadership capabilities with recognized strengths in staff recruiting, training, and developing; successfully motivate staff in achieving optimum performance standards
- A multi-site operations director with demonstrated abilities in developing and maintaining strong, profitable, and professional relationships with staff, management, and the public at all functional levels.
- As a District Manager with one of the nation’s largest retail chains, directed the complete operational aspects of 11 retail stores throughout Alabama and Mississippi with hands-on responsibility for retail sales, marketing, merchandising,promotional/event planning, inventory management, and financial controls
- Has coached baseball and football at the youth, jr. high, and high school levels for 12 years with success at each level
- A clear and distinct calling from God to this position, leading to an excitement and commitment to facilitating and enabling families to home educate in a way that fits with God’s leading in their lives
Sandy Snuggs:
- B.A., Covenant College in Elementary education; Senior Class President, Senior Class Commencement Speaker, Teacher’s Aide

- Support and constant encouragement to her husband, children, and grandchildren (Proverbs 31:28)
What is the long-term commitment of the administrators?
- God has given the administrators a clear calling to this position. However, it is important to remember that the structure of the school is such that should the administration change for any reason, the school will continue to be fully functional.
Administratively, is the school open year-round?
- Yes. Office hours
How can we pray for this endeavor?
- Praise and thank God for His direct answer to our prayers in fulfillment of the original vision of our steering committee, in the form of providing Evangel Sports Complex.
Original Prayer Request: "Please know how much we appreciate that you pray God would continue to show His hand in such a way through Evangel Christian School, that Jesus might receive all the glory. Specifically, please join us in praying that God would raise up permanent athletic facilities. Through the years, God has so richly blessed us through the generosity and willingness of others to allow usage of their facilities, either at no cost or through rental fees. Some of these we would like to thank have included the following churches, schools, and public institutions:
- Briarwood Christian School
- Hoover Parks and Recreation
- Mountain Brook Community Church
- Pelham High School
- Samford University
- Shades Mountain Christian School
- South Shades Crest Baptist Church
However, despite the fact that God continues to provide these places for us to conduct all our activities, we continue to seek the fulfillment of our mission, which includes the provision of our own athletic facilities. We believe that such a blessing will enable us to grow and provide the highest quality athletics programs for home school families, while also allowing us to not be a burden on others, and to open up our facilities to those who might be in our position of needing facilities themselves. If God lays it on your heart, to help provide the means or ideas to fulfill this goal, feel free to contact our Athletic Director.
- We continue to welcome your commitment to pray for Evangel Sports Complex, our athletic program, and our athletic director, Tim Smith.
Are mission efforts or trips a possibility?
- Certainly. Although missions were not an area adopted by the steering committee as part of the school mission, if there is a specific need and a logical tie-in to the educational needs of families, this is something that would be thoroughly reviewed by the board and a response provided.
What makes the character of academic and athletic pursuits different from other groups so that they stand out as bringing honor and glory to God?
- One of our goals, in all we do, will be the pursuit of excellence in accordance with Scripture. “Whatever you do-whether you eat or drink, do all to the glory of God.” We believe the pursuit of excellence, for its own merit, seeks to glorify man. But as we seek to glorify God through all we do and say, we believe He will bless our efforts and glorify Himself. It is our prayer and vision that He uses us to extend His Kingdom.
Are the school facilities available for evening classes, i.e. co-op situations?
- Yes. Evangel Church has adopted us as a school wholeheartedly. Therefore, while we will coordinate activities with the church, the facilities will be available if there is no conflicting previously scheduled event, providing we will be able to provide supervision in accordance with church and school policy.
How does ECS inform students and parents about activities?
- Students will be informed of activities through electronic means. It is mandatory that each family has an email address that they have provided to Evangel Christian School administration, and that they check it routinely in order to stay abreast of the many activities and updates which Evangel Christian School provides.
- We publish an email newsletter (Lightning Ledger), so look forward to receiving that, as your means of staying apprised of everything that’s going on with ECS. Subscribe to the Lightning Ledger.
- Additionally, we have developed a very strong Facebook presence, and we use this media to provide time-sensitive information and updates. If you have a Facebook account, please ‘friend' "Ecs Lightning’ and/or become a fan of our page, "Evangel Christian School (Home of the Lightning)". If you don't have a Facebook account, you can still become a fan of our page and get updates. You can also find us on Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.

Course & Extracurricular Options
Honors Courses
- Core courses taken by high school students, as part of an accelerated program through a junior college or in an advanced manner as approved by the ECS administration will be granted honors recognition on their high school transcript. ECS Administration approval must be given for a course to earn Honors credit.
- When submitting your request for granting honors status to a course, please consider the following:
- Honors course is a distinction applied to certain classes to distinguish them from standard course offerings. The difference between a regular class (such as English 1) and the honors class (English 1 Honors) is not necessarily the amount of work, but the type of work required and the pace of studying. Honors courses are not advanced in the same sense that high school Advanced Placement, Advanced International Certificate of Education and International Baccalaureate courses are. Rather, honors courses are enriched; they offer the same material in greater depth and with a faster pace. Honors courses emphasize critical and independent thinking to produce creative applications of ideas.
- Include the course title, curriculum being used and the reasons that should be considered regarding awarding Honors status to the course.
- AP® Courses‐ Designed for highly motivated high school students these classes must meet AP® requirements as described in the AP® Course Description booklets. These booklets can be downloaded free of charge from AP® Central by following the Course Descriptions link. The courses also may be taught by a certified AP® teacher. College placement or credit may also be given based on the student’s performance on rigorous Advanced Placement® examinations. These exams are given once a year on a designated date. It is possible to take the exam without having taken an AP® course. Barnes and Noble and Books‐a‐Million stores carry AP® Prep exam books.
- -Q: Can I take the AP Examination if I havenʹt taken an AP course? A: Yes. Because the College Board is committed to providing access to the AP Exams to homeschooled students and students whose schools do not offer AP it does not require students to take an AP course prior to taking an AP Exam. The College Board urges students to study the kinds of skills and subjects outlined in the Course Description for each subject, because they represent the basis for the AP Examination. The best way to do so is in a year‐long AP course in which the students and teachers focus on AP‐level work. Some students, however, have taken strong courses and/or have studied in depth on their own. Such students may be able to perform quite well on the AP Exam.

- Note from ΗΣΑ: “The Core total is NOT to be used; please use the composite or complete battery scores only. We cannot allow sponsors to pick and choose which scores to use. So, please use the composite/complete score results.”

Evangel Christian School Statement of Faith
- There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Luke 3:22, 1 John 5:7)
- God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and Truth (John 4:24)
- Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, is God in the flesh (Mt. 1:23, Col. 2:9)
- The Holy Bible as written is the inspired and infallible Word of God
- Man is, by nature, sinful and inherently in need of salvation, totally incapable of saving himself (Ps. 51:5, Gen. 8:21, Ro. 5:12)
- Salvation comes through Jesus Christ and His shed blood (Is. 53)
- The death of Christ provides atonement for our sins (Ro. 5:19, Heb. 10:14)
- Jesus Christ literally rose bodily from the dead (Mt. 27:53, Ac. 1:22, 4:33, Ro. 1:4, 1 Peter 1:3)
- Jesus will return to earth in the Second Advent (Ac. 17:31)
Evangel Christian School Standards of Conduct
The Evangel Christian School Standards of Conduct are designed to communicate community expectations of appropriate conduct and to provide guidelines for restoring brothers or sisters who are in violation of this conduct. Living and receiving instruction with other saved sinners, reminds us of our own imperfections, selfishness, and sins and how we must balance personal needs with the needs of others; or for that matter, the needs of the institution.
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:1,2 (ESV)
Christian freedom is a work of grace not to be denied, but we must also remember what Paul said about "not turning our freedom (liberty) into an opportunity for the flesh." The unity of Christian freedom is Christian responsibility, and each of us must choose to build a habit of life that "captures every thought to the obedience of Christ," "shares the affections of Christ for one another," and "considers the interests of others as more important than our own.” It is our goal to be a community that lives a lifestyle of grace inseparable from obedience. Community takes patience, giving, growing, sharing, and loving, so be patient with one another. Families, therefore, must conduct themselves in a way that reflects a commitment to holy living: doing what the Bible requires, abstaining from what the Bible forbids, and carefully discerning the will of God in every area of life.
- Students at Evangel Christian School are to practice all the virtues taught in the Scriptures, such as discipline, modesty, patience, and honesty and are expected to worship in a local church regularly.
- Students are also required to abstain from all activities which violate Biblical teachings, such as theft, drunkenness, slanderous or profane language, all forms of dishonesty including cheating, and sexual sins (such as premarital sex, adultery, homosexual behavior and the use or possession of obscene or pornographic material). Students must reject all sinful attitudes, such as greed, jealousy, pride, lust, and prejudice against those of a different race, gender, or socio-economic status.
- Additionally, students are to use wisdom and Christ-like discretion in the application of Biblical principles to decisions regarding all areas of life, such as the involvement with various forms of media, social interaction and the physical expression of intimacy in relationships. When students are not at an Evangel Christian School function, they should select places of business, organizations, or events that would promote and support the Standards of Conduct. Students are expected to use discretion by avoiding events that are not primarily for Christ-like edification and social interaction. Students should avoid, and encourage one another to avoid events or organizations that primarily exist to serve alcohol, encourage lewd behavior, or promote inappropriate physical intimacy and/or sexual behavior.
- The Scriptures call us to obey the authorities that have been placed over us in the civil government. All students are required to uphold local, state, and federal law except on the rare occasions when compliance with the civil authority may be in conflict with the Scriptures. Students violating civil laws, such as arson, criminal homicide (manslaughter by negligence), sex offenses (forcible and non-forcible), robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, weapon law violations, drug abuse violations, liquor law violations may be referred to the civil authorities for prosecution, and may also be subject to disciplinary action by the school.
- Realizing that we are daily representatives of the Body of Christ, we establish that students and parents will:
- Maintain high standards of courtesy, morality and honesty◦
- Dress appropriately and modestly, not only while attending specific Evangel Christian School functions, but also in all public appearances.
Discipline
Evangel Christian School Students found not living according to the Biblical teachings will be subject to disciplinary action from the school. The school recognizes that some breeches of the Biblical teachings are best handled through punitive discipline, some by extended counseling or involvement with an outside agency or church and others by informal admonishment. The school reserves the right to handle each situation in the manner that it deems to be most effective for the correction and development of the individual(s) involved, as well as in the best interest of the school community.
“…My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives. It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is training you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?” (Heb. 12:5-8)
At the least, the following five reasons underline the purpose of discipline:
- To avoid God's judgment on the individual and/or the Evangel Christian School Community.
- To remove members of the community who are unwilling to abide by the Standards of Conduct,
- To deter others from committing the same violation,
- To assist in reconciliation and change of the behavior, and
- To stop the behavior deemed unacceptable by the Students, Administration, and Board of Evangel Christian School. Scripture clearly states that we are responsible for the actions of one another (Matthew 18). The contemporary idea of everyone minding his or her own business is foreign to the body of Christ.
All members of Evangel Christian School will personally follow and submit to the Biblical principles for settling conflict or offering correction as described in Matthew 18:15 – 17.
If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him – work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you’ve made a friend. If he won’t listen, take one or two others along so that the presence of witnesses will keep things honest, and try again. If he still won’t listen, tell the church (or, if appropriate, the administrators of Evangel Christian School).
The one-on-one process of discipline allows for the most complete and sensitive understanding of the situation so that the student is not harmed by an unnecessarily rigid or impersonal system. Most discipline should be handled on a peer-to-peer basis. If peer confrontation does not stop and change the behavior, then Matthew 18 provides guidelines for the additional sequential inclusion of higher levels of authority until the inappropriate behavior is discontinued.
If the process should escalate beyond the peer-to-peer step, the school will consider the following criteria when determining the best course of discipline.
- What was the "nature" of the act and the "degree of responsibility" of the student?
- Was the act intentional or unintentional?
- Was the act a first time offense or a repeat offense?
- Is the student currently involved in other disciplinary actions?
- Did the act itself bear disciplinary consequence?
- Is the student self-reporting a violation of the Standard?
- To what extent did the act influence the Evangel or surrounding community?
- What degree of repentance and reconciliation has been evidenced?
- Is the student holding a position of leadership?
If a student self-reports a violation of the Standards as a means to confess, repent, and reconcile an offense, the Administration will work with the student in a manner reflecting the willingness to grow and restore the offended party. Given this heart and spirit of humility, reconciliation and obedience, the offense may not need to be taken to The Board of Evangel Christian School as long as the student and the Administrators can reconcile the offense in the same spirit.
All disciplinary actions are personal concerns of the individual student(s) involved, not for public knowledge. It is to be understood that a "check and balance" system of supervision by the Session of Evangel Church and the Board of Evangel Christian School oversees all disciplinary decisions of the Administrators. This procedure stresses consistency while addressing the needs of the individual student involved.
Families are encouraged to appeal disciplinary decisions with which they disagree through an administrative order of authority and accountability. The decision of any authority can be appealed to the next higher authority. This appeals process is as follows:
1.An Administrator’s decision can be appealed to The Board of Evangel Christian School.
2.A Board decision can be appealed to the Session of Evangel Church, which can either:
a. Refuse to hear this appeal, at which time the decision of the Board will be final, or
b. Lessen, maintain, or strengthen the Board’s decision.
The Session is accountable to Evangel Presbytery, PCA, which is accountable to, and receives its authority from, the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America.
When confrontation is required to reconcile a grievance, all members of Evangel Christian School and its authorities agree to respond to conflict mindful of the following principles*
- GLORIFY GOD - Instead of focusing on our own desires or dwelling on what others may do, we will seek to please and honor God-by depending on His wisdom, power, and love; by faithfully obeying His commands, and by seeking to maintain a loving merciful and forgiving attitude.
- GET THE LOG OUT OF YOUR OWN EYE - Instead of attacking others of dwelling on their wrongs, we will take responsibility for our own contributions to conflicts-confessing our sins, asking God to help us change any attitudes and habits that lead to the conflict, and seeking to repair any harm we may have caused.
- GO AND SHOW YOUR BROTHER OR SISTER HIS OR HER FAULT - Instead of pretending that conflict doesn't exist or talking about others behind their backs, we will choose to overlook minor offenses, or we will talk directly and graciously with those who offenses seem to serious to overlook. When a conflict with another Christian cannot be resolved in private, we will ask others in the body of Christ to help us settle the matter in a Biblical manner.
- GO AND BE RECONCILED - Instead of accepting premature compromise or allowing relationships to wither, we will actively pursue genuine peace and reconciliation-forgiving others as God, for Christ's sake, has forgiven us, and seeking just and mutual beneficial solutions to our differences.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
